COMMUNITY SAFETY AND WASH

Trident Foundation introduced the Community Safety and WaSH program in 2021 in order to Increase Community Safety and Sanitation Awareness Within the Mine Catchment Area, through the following initiatives; Community Safety Awareness Campaigns; Water User Committees Governance; Water Quality Monitoring/NWASCO Compliance; Water Infrastructure Sustenance; Sanitation & Hygiene Awareness Campaigns.

Community Water Reticulation Systems

In order to support clean and safe drinking water in the surrounding communities Trident Foundation facilitated the construction of 5 water reticulation systems in 5 different communities. Each reticulation system comprises of a 32,000 litre water tank, 100m deep boreholes, and Solar Powered submersible pumps. Furthermore, each community as an average of 20 tap water points, with Kisasa Community having 64 tap water points and two water tanks (32,000 litres each). In order to manage these water schemes, TFL established 25 water user committees in the 5 communities. The committees were trained in water infrastructure management, hygiene and sanitation.

Key Highlights for 2022

  • FQM Health and Wellness conducted a School based Malaria prevalence targeting 23 schools (20 impacted schools and 3 control schools). The objective of the study was to conduct a survey among school children of age 5-14 years to establish the point prevalence of malaria parasite in Kalumbila District.
  • Conducted professional services through community outreach in three (3) catchment health facilities. Services included Growth Monitoring and Promotion, Universal Child Immunisation, Malaria screening and In- formation Education, and Communication (IEC) material distribution. A total of 286 children accessed various services during the outreach.
  • Supported the 2022 safe motherhood week commemoration with the theme “Deliver at a health facility with a skilled birth attendant” in five (5) catchments facilities. The activity included awareness on family planning, antenatal care, postnatal care, post abortion care, HIV/AIDS/STIs, malaria control and baby hamper distribution to postnatal mothers to encourage health facility deliveries.
